Nana and I were part of a community tag sale in Laurel Park, Northampton, MA, and someone had a second-hand bra on their table for sale. They wanted a few cents for it.
I whispered to Nana, “I like that one.”
She bought it for me and put it in a bag. I walked around the rest of the tag sale, hugging it to my chest. It was real.
Lily on Modern Family wanted to start wearing a bra, so Mitch and Cam bought her one. It was a sweet storyline with a common awkward conflict many parents face.
The only thing that bothers me about the show is that people still call them training bras. What the heck are they training for, and can’t we change the name?
It seems condescending to me, and although I understand getting used to wearing a bra all the time isn’t easy, come on, people. Let’s change the name to something a little less awkward, a little less demeaning.
I don’t have girls, but I was one, and the name is humiliating. When I was growing up and leaving the little girl world, the last thing I wanted to think was that I was in training. The name wasn’t created and isn’t being used for the girl’s sake, but for the parents. Don’t call it a practice bra, or a training bra, or even a first bra. Just call it a bra.

Dear Teri,
You poise a great question to those who make this “garment” for young women!!! (A question I never even thought of; but makes perfect sense)!!!
With your great writing ability, do I sense a letter from you being sent to those companies who manufacture such products, asking that very same question???
Love,
Uncle Lee 🙂

It took a long time for my buds to grow to a cup size and my training bra helped get me ready for the emergence of my D girls.
